What Is the NADA Protocol?
The NADA Protocol (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) is a standardized form of auricular (ear) acupuncture designed to support emotional regulation, stress reduction, trauma recovery, and addiction healing. The protocol involves placing small, sterile needles in specific points on both ears while participants sit quietly for approximately 30–45 minutes.
NADA is most commonly offered in group settings and is intentionally non-verbal, allowing individuals to rest, regulate, and heal without pressure to speak or process verbally. It is used as a complementary, supportive practice, not as a replacement for medical or behavioral health care.
Historical Roots: Community Healing & Liberation Health
The origins of the NADA Protocol are deeply rooted in community-based healing, racial justice, and liberation health movements of the 1970s.
During this time, members of the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords Organization were actively addressing health inequities in Black and Brown communities. These organizations recognized that addiction, trauma, and chronic illness were not moral failures, but consequences of systemic oppression, poverty, racism, and lack of access to care.
One of the most influential figures in this movement was Dr. Mutulu Shakur, a Black acupuncturist, healer, and activist. Working alongside the Black Panthers and the Young Lords, Dr. Shakur helped introduce acupuncture as a community healing tool, particularly for people experiencing heroin addiction and withdrawal.
At Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, these organizers and health workers integrated acupuncture into community-run detoxification and wellness programs. They observed that stimulating specific points on the ear significantly reduced withdrawal symptoms, anxiety, agitation, and emotional distress — without the use of pharmaceuticals.
This work was revolutionary: it brought ancient healing practices into radical, community-led healthcare, making acupuncture accessible to people who had historically been excluded from such services.
Formation of the NADA Protocol
Out of this work, a simplified and consistent ear acupuncture approach was developed so it could be taught, replicated, and used widely in community settings. In 1985, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was formally established to preserve, standardize, and train providers in this method.
Since then, the NADA Protocol has been used globally in:
- Addiction recovery programs
- Behavioral and mental health settings
- Community clinics
- Prisons and reentry programs
- Disaster and crisis response
- Schools and youth programs
- Grassroots and nonprofit wellness initiatives
Its continued use reflects its roots in collective care, accessibility, and healing justice.
The Five NADA Ear Points
The NADA Protocol uses five specific points on each ear, applied bilaterally:
- Sympathetic
Helps regulate the autonomic nervous system and supports deep relaxation.
- Shen Men (Spirit Gate)
Calms the mind and nervous system, reducing stress and emotional overwhelm.
- Kidney
Supports inner stability, resilience, and easing of fear.
- Liver
Aids emotional regulation, detoxification, and the smooth flow of energy.
- Lung
Supports grief release, breath, and overall vitality.
Together, these points work synergistically to bring the body into a more regulated and balanced state.
How the NADA Protocol Works
The NADA Protocol is believed to work by:
- Calming the nervous system
- Supporting emotional self-regulation
- Encouraging the body’s natural healing responses
- Creating a grounded, meditative state that supports recovery and resilience
Because it does not require diagnosis or verbal engagement, the protocol is accessible across cultures, languages, and levels of readiness.
Effectiveness and Purpose
The NADA Protocol is most effective as a supportive, adjunct practice within a broader framework of care. Many participants report:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved sleep
- Greater emotional balance
- Decreased cravings and withdrawal discomfort
- Increased sense of calm and presence
Its power lies not only in the points used, but in the collective, quiet, community-centered environment in which it is offered.
Safety
When provided by trained practitioners, the NADA Protocol is considered safe and gentle. Side effects are minimal and may include mild tenderness, temporary fatigue, or deep relaxation. It is suitable for a wide range of populations and settings.
Summary
The NADA Ear Acupuncture Protocol is a trauma-informed, community-rooted healing practice born from the work of Black and Brown liberation movements, including the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords, and leaders such as Dr. Mutulu Shakur. Developed to address addiction, trauma, and systemic health inequities, it continues to be used worldwide as a tool for nervous system regulation, collective healing, and accessible care
